Abantu African Drum school focuses on the study of African Music and other unique art forms. Classes and workshops are offered in African Drumming and percussion or a regular basis. These classes reveal the beauty, depth and diversity of the cultures of Africa. This "school without permanent walls" travels to the town where you are in Devon. Abantu African school is operated by tutor and drumming author, Denis Kigongo in different locations and towns in Devon UK with a whole list of different instructors bringing a variety or skills and techniques from different countries of Explore authentic local rhythms from Africa’s different tribes.The Instruments used are all authentic African and include Ngoma drums, Engalabi, djembe, kpanlogo, and duns, talking drum, bells, Marakas, Ensasi and many more. Emphasis will be placed on the background and cultural significance of each specific rhythm, when it is traditionally played and why. BeginnersWill be taught the basic techniques used to get the best sounds out of the djembe and other local percussive instruments. You will be introduced to co-ordination exercise to stimulate dexterity and develop control over your hand movements so you can start playing some basic rhythms from word go. Intermediate ClassesWill look at more complex rhythms in different time signatures that are played at faster tempos. Traditional song arrangements will be looked at with explanations on breaks, signals and calls, and how the various parts interlock. Advanced studentsWill get the chance to work on soloing techniques with a focus on improvisation, leading the music, and the interaction between the drum and the dance. Everyone will learn to respect the time more and develop a stronger internal pulse and feel for the circular nature of the music. Drums will be made available by the school but there will be chance to purchase your own drum if you want to. |
